Need Help with fitting Muzzle (Fear Aggressive English Setter Rescue)
Thought perhaps someone on this list may have an answer !
I now have 3 muzzles in front of me. None of them fit. I was wondering if there is some sureproof method for measuring a dog for one.
Most companies suggest the nose circumference…and some go by weight. I have done both. I measured the nosepiece of the one I have been using for years (vet visits only)….and used that as a guide.
Well, the first muzzle that arrived I had ordered by the 8″ nose circumference sizing…that put this dog into the 70# category when she actually weighs 36#. The next piece is way too long and I think the bridge piece is also.
So much for going by circumference and not weight.
I think this lit’l girl falls into the standard size of a English Springer Spaniel…but her face is a wee bit…trimmer.
Anyway, you get the idea. She is not a Dalmation (70#s)…she is 36# with a circumference at the nostril of 8″. Seems to me there should be some guideline for the *length* of the dogs face from nose to neck ???
Also…I am *thinking* of trying a basket muzzle or plastic basket muzzle type simply because they seem to allow the dog more breathing room..and NOTHING is more stressful for this dog then the vets…so she NEEDS to pant to cool down etc.
I would also consider using this muzzle for introductions to other dogs if needed, in the future. (fear aggression )
So…does anyone know of a good brand, a way to measure….Has anyone tried the HUSHER? ….Or know of a muzzle that comes with a velcro closure instead of the usual buckle….I THINK it would take me forever to get the buckle type on her correctly and I am not even sure I want to try. I need to do this quickly….
FWIW..my vet has no problem muzzling her…she is scared to death and totally ooperative.
Private replys are fine.
There are some nylon cone muzzles that have velcro adjustments over the muzzle part that allow a more customised fit. We use these quite a bit and the velcro closure seems very secure. Browse the pet store websites, and I’m sure you will see them. Any muzzle with the fastex-type plastic buckle could have some velcro sewn on for added security, if needed.
The plastic/wire basket muzzles are better in some ways, but if the dog lunges, they can still be a little painful!
One of my veterinary suppliers (Jorgensen??) has a very extensive line of nylon cone muzzles, so maybe your vet could order the right one for you.
