My dog is leaving his Mark on the wrong things!

I have a 3 year old Jack Russell named Milo, who is very friendly and I thought was pretty much well trained.  Recently we starting going to a dog park and we typically see the same people and dogs.  Yesterday, Milo for the first time lifted his leg and proceeds to mark one of the gentleman’s bag that was left on the ground.  I immediately reprimanded him by telling him no.  Shortly after that another gentleman was squatting down and Milo came over to his back side and lifted his leg.  Fortunately, I saw Milo doing this and yelled no!  This man was lucky and was not marked by my little guy.

I was so shocked and embarrassed that Milo did this and I am very reluctant to bring him back.  How can I prevent this from happening again and why would he be doing this in the first place.

Thanks,
Margi

This is very common when male dogs are around a lot of other dogs in an area like a dog park…dogs also seem to mark more if they are slightly stressed. The behavior however repugnant to us is fairly normal. My advice is don’t skip the dog park if you enjoy it but do keep an eye on Milo.

And if anyone does go to a dog park NEVER put your bags, jackets or the cooler on the ground.
