Loose Leash Walking
Ruby and I started companion dog 2 last night ! It was all very exciting… I expect we’ll go through several times before a sucessful Canine Good Citizen award : > )
I read a great post yesterday regarding loose lead walking… basically the author said I can fool myself but not my dog, either their is NO pulling or anything goes. Aaaahaaa moment, I can not randomly decide how much pulling is ok !! Their can be none at all or Im’ only fooling myself…not Ruby. On our walk this morning I was holding her to a standard… NO pulling, meaning the leash held in my left hand drops straight down, I do allow her to the end of the leash, sans tension <G>
We walk with a gentle leader. When she pulls and I stop, her head comes back my way. This morning I was saying Front at that point to call her to me.. Treat keep walking. But what do ya’ll suggest be the procedure once the pull happens and I’ve stopped?
My goal is to provide her with enough reinforcement that she doesn’t make it to the end of the leash where she may be tempted to go too far.
Any suggestions will be appreciated
Cheers, Christine & Ruby
