Welcome To 'Dog Training Tools' Category:

This page of the website is dedicated to dog training tools - even though the most important tool has always been and remains your knowledge and persistence, there are great number of excellent tools such as clickers, collars, leashes, and other equipment that can make your job much easier. Some of them have been around for ages, while others are new electronic devices that have been developed in the past few years.

Some of the most commonly used dog training tools are listed below, along with a quick description:

  • Collars some in many shapes and sizes, and variations and shock, spike, martingale, chain, and electronic ones are only a handful of them that you can find on the market today. They are typically made of metal, leather, nylon, or fabric.
  • Leashes are usually made out of leather and come in various length; some leashes can be looped around the dog's neck and eliminate the need for collars.
  • Vests and chest halters are used by some trainers to reinforce positive behavior.
  • Muzzles are used on dogs that bite or bark uncontrollably; however, they are only a short-term solution, yet highly effective when dealing with aggressive dogs or breeds.
  • Clickers are excellent dog training tools, which can be used to reinforce positive behavior.
  • Bait pouches are used by many professional dog trainers and could be invaluable when trying to teach your dog new tricks.
  • Dog halters are often used to train and guide dogs instead of collars since often the dogs could slip out of the collars easily.

Are there other dog training tools that you have used? Post a comment and let us know what has helped you and what you found ineffective.

I just finished two days of seminars from Susan Garrett, a very reknown trainer, particularly for agility competitors

She’s amazing. I really learned a lot. The first class was intro to the clicker, and the second was clicker training for puppies. What particularly stood out, was that every behavior has a consequence, and how enforcing these consequences, it works way better than mere collar corrections would in changing behavior. It’s because ultimately, the [...]

Formerly feral dog w/ trust & bolting issues

I searched the archives & didn’t think I found a thread that was quite on-point. I hope our situation is not too unusual, but I fear we may need to employ an animal behaviorist at some point to address this problem. In 2/00 we adopted a sweet, older collie/shepherd mix who had been rescued by [...]

Dry dog foods

Dancer has been part of our family for almost a year now (a year on 8/30). That’s hard to believe! He’s doing pretty well–had a potty training set back a couple of weeks ago, but we took a few days where he went out much more frequently and appear to have gotten things back in [...]

Flea Control Magic Treatments

Flea treatments are really more detrimental to our dogs rather than the flea itself! A friend of mine lost a very lovely bitch who just completed her championship by applying Advantage flea control. The dog died within hours of application. She bled to death internally. Bayer Corp. paid for tests, but of course there was [...]

Maniacal Barking – he barks like a lunatic whenever we see other dogs

I live in Chicago (downtown) and rescue BC’s. I know, not the ideal combination, but it often works. I’m currently fostering a dog who is sweet and loveable in so many ways — but he barks like a lunatic whenever we see other dogs. As you can imagine, walking in the city, we see quite [...]

I can’t seem to get my 11 mo. old Cavalier pup accustomed to wearing the Halti

We introduced as recommended, just a few minutes at first coupled with lots of treats for the first 2 weeks and then gradually working up the time. The dogwalker started using it at about week 3. He still fights it continuously trying to pull it off with his paws and rubbing against bushes, grass etc. [...]

Me and my dog Chip – Accident in The Park

Yesterday me and Chip went for our usual morning walk in the park, but it didn’t end as usual I was teaching Chip to stop, sit, then chase a squirrel on my command. She is getting to be an excellent student with this. So good, that 7 out of 10 times she see’s a squirrel [...]

I did take the advice of the veterans here and I got my dog after the Holidays

Morning. Well, I’ve been quiet while reading everything. I did take the advice of the veterans here and I got my dog after the Holidays… in retrospect it was excellent advice (If I was so tired from the holiday hustle and bustle then why wouldnt she be???) Okay… I love my dog (9 weeks today [...]

My name is Marilyn and I live in BC, Canada, with my husband and our nearly-8-year-old daughter. We have an older rescue dog, who is now 10 and we brought a Jack Russell into our home 2 months ago – Lilly is now 4 months old. She has had all her puppy vaccinations and has [...]
